Sapuen High GTX hiking boots

I have two pairs of hiking shoes, both in US size 8.5, but this pair feels small, so I have to return it first.

Size

Very sturdy yet comfortable boots with great ankle support. I tested a few more brands (Salewa, Vasque) but none were as comfortable on my feet as the Sapuens. They do run quite small and narrow though and I had to go up half a size.

My husband is very happy with his purchase. He had Mammut boots before they last so well and they well very confortable and well made.

Great boots

I wore Mammut boots for years but tried others as retail sources for Mammut dried up. My biggest complaints with other lighter boots related to grip and durability. I was pleased that Altitude Sports was carrying Mammut and I wanted to give a newer and lighter model a try. Hence my choice with the Sapuen.

I have used the Sapuens in wet weather in Northern Ontario where the rock faces can be very slick. Happily, these boots gripped very well and I felt more confident on wet rock than I had since moving away from Mammut.

Fit-wise, I consciously went half a size larger [for the first time] since I had found Mammuts&#x27; fit to be on the small for my feet -- especially since I use orthotics. While Mammuts seem to run small for me, they are incredibly comfortable. With the Sapuen, I really like the addition of the pad which has the rear heal loop attached and supports the achilles. It really helps nestle my heal in place very comfortably.
 
I didn&#x27;t have any real problems with breaking in the Sapuen. I did several hikes with a full pack and had a minor quibble. There was point pressure near the first outer hook eyelet adjacent to my right ankle. For some reason, that area was folding into my ankle as it flexed and became uncomfortable after a few hours. I adjusted the lacing and it seemed to get better. I don&#x27;t know whether this was due to less robust wall material, lack of break in, me, or all of the above. 

Overall, these are great boots and I&#x27;m glad to be back with Mammut.

The boots feel like providing excellent support and overall comfort. The toe box area feels somewhat constricted, which might be a consideration for some. In terms of construction, these boots are impressively sturdy, making them seem like a solid choice overall. True to size apart from the tightness in the toebox.
