an airy feeling to it, although when it comes to actual coverage, it's a bit more robust than some other pieces in its class. I've also owned the Patagonia Houdini (among other ultralights), and I find the fabrics, sizing, the airy feeling+robust coverage, the brimmed hood (nice for rain), and the side pockets all to be nice value-adds for the Vital. It also tends to be less expensive than other high-end pieces in its class.
The colour and style are like the Altitude Sports photo: a nice dark grey with complementary yellow trims, both of which add depth and punch to anything black (95% of the rest of my gear) that you may wear underneath.
There are a lot of terrible photos of the Vital floating around that make it look like a concrete garbage sack. Altitude Sports' photo is more accurate. Rab design may be more function-driven, but it's never ugly, and, if anything, this piece is more toward the elegant side of their gear.
In terms of fit, I'm 5' 9", about 145lbs with a slender build and a small spare tire. Although Rab's sizing varies, this isn't one of their trim / athletic build pieces. I find it runs a little large, which suited my purposes. I wear an XS in Patagonia regular cut, a S in Arcteryx trim, and a XS in Burton for context.
For those that want something that fits more closely over a t-shirt the way the Houdini tends to, then a S may be a bit too large. For those with the same build looking for a little added protection in variable conditions that they can throw over a couple of layers, this piece is more than capable.
If you're between sizes, you can always get a membership and exchange it (with a nice discount thrown in -- I knocked another $10 or so off my Vital because it was a double membership discount sale). Lire moinsRead less about I bought this as a light, packable
